SAKA International CIC is a UK-based charity dedicated to improving community health, education, and wellbeing through outreach, awareness, and empowerment. Our mission is to bring health information and services directly to local communities, helping individuals take charge of their wellbeing in a supportive and inclusive environment.
On 30th October, SAKA International CIC held a successful Diabetes Awareness and Health Screening Event at Trinity AMEZ Church in North London, as part of our ongoing commitment to improving community health and wellbeing.
The event brought together local residents for an afternoon dedicated to raising awareness of diabetes, promoting early detection, and offering practical support for those at risk or already living with the condition.
Our team of qualified nurses carried out a range of health checks, including blood glucose screening, blood pressure measurement, and Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation. Participants received personalised advice where necessary, along with guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and reducing their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
We were also joined by a representative from Diabetes UK, who provided valuable health promotion literature and information about local support services available to individuals and families affected by diabetes.
The atmosphere was friendly and engaging, with open discussions about lifestyle, diet, and the importance of early diagnosis. Community members took the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about simple, everyday changes that can improve long-term health.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Pastor Ioni Anguin and the congregation of Trinity AMEZ Church for their warm welcome and generous hospitality. Church members kindly prepared and served delicious cakes and hearty Caribbean soup, offering everyone a chance to relax, socialise, and share in a true sense of community spirit.
A heartfelt thank you also goes to everyone working behind the scenes in the kitchen and throughout the church — your dedication and kindness helped make this event such a success.
Why Events Like This Matter
Diabetes remains one of the most significant public health challenges in the UK. According to Diabetes UK, more than 5 million people are currently living with diabetes — and many more are undiagnosed. Early detection and awareness are essential for preventing complications and improving long-term outcomes.
Certain groups are known to be at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, including:
- Older adults: Risk increases significantly after the age of 40 (or from age 25 in people of South Asian, African, or Caribbean heritage).
- Ethnic minorities: People of South Asian, African, African-Caribbean, and Black heritage are two to four times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes compared with the white population.
- Those with a family history of diabetes, or who are overweight, have high blood pressure, or lead a sedentary lifestyle.
By hosting events like this one, SAKA International CIC aims to empower communities with knowledge, early screening opportunities, and access to professional advice, supporting healthier and more informed living.
Looking Ahead
We extend our heartfelt thanks once again to Pastor Ioni Anguin, the congregation of Trinity AMEZ Church, and all the volunteers, healthcare professionals, and community members who contributed to this meaningful day.
SAKA International CIC is available to run similar health and wellbeing events in partnership with community organisations, churches, and local groups. If your community would benefit from a health screening or awareness session, please get in touch — we’d love to work with you.
We’ll also be sharing photos from the day on our website and social media pages, capturing some of the wonderful moments from this uplifting community event.
Together, we can help more individuals understand their risk, take proactive steps to protect their health, and live well with — or free from diabetes.

November 5, 2025A huge thank you to SAKA International CIC and AMEZ Church for putting on this event. It was pleasing to be a part of and witness healthcare practitioners and a representative from Diabetes UK empower individuals to discuss their wellbeing in a supportive and inclusive environment, through a holistic and personal approach. The turnout was great and the feedback gathered was positive. We are looking forward to more events to empower and bring the communities together, through a medical and inclusive lense.
